FAQs

How do you pronounce açai?

There are a number of variations between countries but we prefer to say it how the tree climbers do which is (AH-SIGH-EEE).

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery is free! It is included in the prices listed =)

Please Note:

For frozen puree deliveries please make sure you are in to collect the order, it is up to you to make sure the açai is put in the freezer as soon as possible. We will not be able to issue refunds if the açai is left unattended after delivery.

What do I do if I’m not going to be in?

Please let us know when you place an order if you will not be at home to receive it on any certain day and we will ensure your açai arrives on a convenient day for you. It is your responsibility to ensure the açai is put in the freezer as soon as possible and we cannot offer refunds for açai defrosting on the doorstep. However, the insulated packaging should protect from defrosting  a little while but we can make no guarantees about this as it largely depends on the ambient temperature and duration it waits. DPD will send you notifications as soon as your order is out for delivery and you will have the option to leave your açai in a safe place or with a neighbour.

How much açai should I buy?

Our packages start at 2kg, this is enough to make 10 large açai bowls or 20 smoothies. The higher the volume of açai you purchase, the better the price per kg due to the cost of delivery.

How much space will 3kg of açai puree take up in my freezer?

Only about the size of a small shoe box, each 100g sachet is about the size and shape of an iphone 7, so most home freezers will have enough space with a little jiggling around. If, not there’s always that 2 year old broth you can finally eat for lunch…

How long do I have to wait for my delivery?

We fulfil deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays, so you’ll only ever have to wait up to 4 days after placing an order.

How do I store my açai puree?

Please put it in the freezer as soon as you can and it will last 2 years at -18oC  (standard for a domestic freezer).

What is açai puree?

It is pure açai pulp shredded from the famous tropical berry which is mostly found on palms trees in the Amazon jungle. There is also a little bit of filtered water, just enough to extract the açai pulp from the stone and allow the açai puree to flow through the pasteurisation pipes. The açai berry looks like a blueberry but the berry itself is in fact very dense and and the majority of its composition consists of a big stone (up to 95% of the total!). All açai pulp is extracted from the stones using a process of friction and water, thus the thin skin (açai pulp) is shredded from the stone and pulled through the extraction machine assisted by water. This is how pure unsweetened açai puree is born.

Maintaining a high concentration of açai fruit is our absolute priority, which is why ours measures a minimum 15% solid content, as high as we could get it, with as little water as possible used in extraction – for that extra creaminess. There is also a small amount of citric acid (<0.2%) to help retain the colour and flavour of our fresh açai puree.

Who is the delivery made with?

We use DPD for all of our deliveries, and they operate a carbon neutral next-day delivery service.

How is the açai kept frozen during delivery?

We wrap it in sheep’s wool insulation (fully compostable) which is lined by a recyclable material to separate the bare wool from the packages. Alongside this we place frozen ice packs in the package, and altogether this keeps the açai pouches frozen for the 24-30 hours (depending on the ambient temperature) required for DPD’s next day service. Please feel free to re-use your ice packs.

How do I eat açai?

There are many ways to eat açai, as a breakfast smoothie bowl, a sauce, a gravy, a dessert, a main course or a juice drink. We have only scraped the surface potential of this versatile fruit, but we’re greatly looking forward to a life’s exploration, which we’ll be sure to share with you. Please see our recipe page for some ideas thus far. Be sure to blend well and eat with good friends and in times of great need.

How is açai prepared?

The best way to prepare açai is to blend the pure unsweetened frozen açai puree in pre-broken chunks with other ingredient(s) which are high in oils, fats or sugars (e.g. coconut cream, syrups, DF milks). The reason for this being that the sugars and fats present in the other ingredients emulsify the açai blend making a smooth glossy texture, softly balancing those delicious unique flavours across your palate.

What is the flavour of pure unsweetened açai?

Açai is naturally a bitter fruit. The raw fruit gives hints of red berries with a slightly earthy and bitter taste and a rich, creamy and decadent texture. The flavour profile is very similar to cacao (the raw ingredient used to blend chocolate) and as such it mixes particularly well with sweet ingredients which embellish and compliment the flavour of the açai. If you have a sweet tooth then we recommend blending your açai with banana, honey, agave or guarana (as most açai parlours do), or you can just have it pure & natural (maybe with a bit of nut milk to help emulsify the texture).
